Direct conversion

Figure 5-24 shows the NE-602 chip used as a direct-conversion receiver. In this type of circuit, the local oscillator (LO) operates on the same frequency as the received RF signal. As a result, when the two are zero beat., the difference IF frequency is the audio modulating the incoming carrier. In CW reception, the LO is tuned to a frequency a few hundred hertz from the incoming RF. In that case, the difference frequency will be a beat note that is interpreted as a CW signal.
