A 21-slot card cage houses a printed-circuit motherboard carrying edge connectors into which the C.M.I, circuit boards are inserted. The cards can be accessed by hinging down the front panel, and they can removed from the front of the unit without requiring the use of any tools.
The General Interface Card (CMI 28)' is an optional card for the Fairlight CMI Series IIX. Please note that for use in the Series IIX machines a CMl-25 rev-3 motherboard is required (or equivalently modified old motherboard). The General Interface Card is designed to handle reading and generating of SMPTE code and to control four MIDI ports as well as controlling the CLICK feature. Because its main purpose is for SMPTE and MIDI It is often referred to as the SMIDI Card. In the Series IIX machines the card is plugged into the second slot on the left between the Master Card and a Channel Card. All DMA devices are interconnected on the motherboard in a daisy chain . Each device is assigned a given priority in the chain and must wait until no higher priority device is already using the bus. The 6809 CPU is the always the last device in the chain. The integrated system is based on a single TMS320C3x DSP. Figure 3 shows the block diagram of the system hardware. Spectrum Signal Processing's TMS320C30 system board was used for software development and experiments. In production, the low cost TMS320C32 can be used. The system board has two channel input output (I O) capabilities. Both of the channels have 16-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) and digital-to-analog converters (DACs). The integrated system requires six input and three output channels. The input channels are used for the revolutions-per-minute (RPM) signal from the car (a reference microphone was used to obtain the reference noise signal in the prototype), the received signal from the cellular base, two microphones placed at both sides of the driver's headrest, the audio signal from the stereo system, and the mode switch to determine whether the system is in HFCP mode or AANC mode. 1) PENB is a universal buss signal which enables or inhibits access to all peripherals on the buss. This signal is fed via the motherboard back into the Q256 since the map selection logic and the mapram are themselves peripherals. The output signal is forced active after power up to ensure configuration of the mapping system is possible, and released by the first read of the parity status register.
The relay switch matrix and resistors are shown on Sheet 1 of the A5 Ohms PCA schematic, and the switch control circuits are shown on Sheet 5 of the A5 Ohms PCA schematic. A block diagram of the high low and high-sense low-sense relay routing is shown in Figures 2-2 and 2-3. The relay matrix provides switching between the various resistor values and the A3 Motherboard PCA, and also switches in guard circuits, 2-wire mode compensation circuits, and other compensation circuits. These relays are latching type and can be set or reset. A3 Motherboard PCA connections are shown on Sheet 1 (8A-8D). K29 and K30 isolate the ohms output and sense lines from the A3 Motherboard PCA. The HIGUARD signal is switched through K25 and can be used to drive the shields of HI cables when the Calibrator output is active. See the Guard Circuits section for more details.
The CPU communicates with the A6 Digital Synthesis PCA through serial communication lines through J1, a 20-pin cable to the A3 Motherboard PCA. All communication with the A6 Digital Synthesis PCA is through differential transceivers and transformers. The differential drivers reduce noise coupling between the guarded and non-guarded CPU circuits. The transformers isolate the guarded and unguarded circuits. The transformers are found on the A6 Digital Synthesis PCA. See Sheet 7 of the A6 Digital Synthesis PCA schematic.
